Refused, “Tannhauser/Derivè”, The Shape of Punk to Come
The Shape of Punk to Come is generally considered to be one of the most influential punk albums of the last 20 years. In this record Refused stretches the definition of “punk” with tracks as Tannhauser/Derive, which includes a reference to the theme The Augurs of Spring: Dances of the Young Girls from Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. An eight-minute spectacle of violin-addled tension-and-release rock that creeps toward oblivion as expertly as Spiderland-era Slint.
